Newsletter – Q2 2024

So far this year
we’ve saved:

14,600 tonnes of carbon from domestic projects

17,900 tonnes of carbon from commercial projects

Introduction

Welcome to the second edition of our employee newsletter, which we’ve moved to a quarterly basis rather than monthly following your feedback.

Following on from the new structure announcement a couple of weeks ago to bring SCIS and CEG together as One Team, I understand the concerns and uncertainty that change can often bring.

However, I’m keen to emphasise that we are embarking on a really exciting journey of growth and collaboration, which will provide lots of great opportunities. Our unified team will benefit from a diverse range of perspectives and skills, fostering an environment where creativity and innovation can thrive, enabling a shared success that will drive us forward. We’ll also be looking at developing  a unified culture and set of values that we all believe in and aspire to.

I’m also really excited to share two great achievements. Firstly, we’ve now got full planning consent for our first ever Bundle homes – 2 eco-friendly semi-detached properties and we’ll be keeping you posted with video footage updates on how that progresses once we start the build towards the end of the year.

Secondly, we’ve become a participant of the UN Global Compact, a voluntary corporate sustainability scheme that I’m really passionate about and something that aligns extremely well with our organisation’s mission and values.

I’m also keen to acknowledge longevity of service – whether you’ve been with the business one year, or from when it started back in 2010. So we’ve introduced a new section which celebrates the anniversaries of employees within the last quarter.

Which leads nicely into the final note from me on one of our newest members of staff who has demonstrated an incredible passion and commitment to the organisation since he joined in November 2023. Our Employee Focus this month is on Sam MacDonald!

Key business updates

Q1 2024 Financial Performance

Our financial year starts at the beginning of April every year, so whilst many people consider Quarter 1 (Q1) to be January, February and March, to tie in with our financial year, our Q1 is April, May and June.

This has delivered the following results summary:

  • Consistent month on month growth in SCIS in both sales and profitability in Q1

  • Overhead spend for the year remains within budget whilst also making some significant investments

  • CEG remain on budget with a gross profit margin of 26%

  • Strong forecast for Q2 across both businesses

So overall, a good start to our financial year, with an optimistic growth trajectory.

Bundle Homes

We’re really excited to share the news that after nearly 2 years (a big shout out to Marc Jones for his perseverance!), we’ve now got full planning consent for our first ever eco-friendly Bundle homes. These will be 2 semi-detached properties and the plans are outlined in the image above.

This draft EPC shows the true brilliance of the design which will mean the running costs of each house are projected to be just under £50 per month.

This extremely innovative design has the living space upstairs with a glass roof so that the kitchen, dining and lounge areas will be illuminated from natural light helping to cut energy consumption during the day.

We have also angled the stairs so that the light from the roof will penetrate down into the ground floor.

Bedrooms 1 and 2 both have double doors into the garden and patio area which will make an amazing facility for breakfast or coffee in the garden.

Watch this space for further updates and video progress of the build!

UN Global Compact

We’re  extremely proud and delighted to share that SCIS Group has officially become a participant of the UN Global Compact!

This is a voluntary corporate sustainability initiative that aligns extremely well with the ethos of our organisation consisting of ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption.

Our commitment to sustainability and corporate responsibility has always been a cornerstone of our values, and this participation further solidifies our dedication to these important global goals. The environment in particular, is an area that is central to everything we do at SCIS Group.

Our core mission is all about delivering energy efficient properties – both domestic and commercial. Whether through better insulation or utilising renewable energy sources, our goal is to significantly contribute to achieving the 18% carbon reduction target for residential properties, which is part of the UK’s commitment to reaching net zero by 2050.

We firmly believe – and have seen in reality – that growth and commercial success can be achieved by committing to these principles.

A huge thank you to our Group Sustainability Director, Barbara Davis for all the hard work and effort that has gone into this achievement.

Employee focus - Sam MacDonald, newly qualified Retrofit Coordinator

We know our greatest asset is our people and we have an unwavering commitment to investing in our employees’ growth and development – whether they’ve been with us for years or they’re a fresh-faced newcomer.

Case in point: Sam MacDonald.

Sam is originally from Inverness but moved down to Glasgow for university about 9 years ago and has been there ever since which probably makes him the most northern employee who currently works for SCIS!

Graduating a few years ago he studied History and Law and then went on to do a master’s in International Law and Security, so a bit different to the eco Industry!

In his spare time, Sam enjoys both watching and playing sport (football, tennis, badminton) and is a big fan of Celtic Football Club, going to as many games as he can!  And he was obviously supporting Scotland at the recent Euros 🙂!

Since Sam joined our team in November as a Coordination Assistant, he’s been working towards his Domestic Energy Assessor, Retrofit Assessor and Retrofit Coordinator qualifications. We’re proud to announce that Sam has smashed these qualifications in just six months and he’s now a qualified Retrofit Coordinator! 🎉

Sam now joins the ranks of fully-fledged installers who enable SCIS to deliver more than 100 top-notch energy efficiency solutions to our clients every week.

Sam comments:

"I kind of fell into the eco industry but have loved it ever since! I have really enjoyed the aspect of helping people's homes become more energy efficient, reducing their bills and improving their comfort, whilst also feeling like I am playing an integral part of helping the planet become more sustainable at the same time."

Smart Savers:
we want you!

We want to share more energy saving tips videos like turning down your boiler, turning your TV off standby, etc.

We need volunteers in the office (this only works when the subject is something we can do in the office, like saving water in the kitchen) or at home in a shorts/reels-style format. We provide the tips and the editing. 🙂
