Active Lifestyles Stroud

The property

Stroud District Council is fully committed to achieving carbon neutrality, focusing on reducing the carbon footprint of key community facilities like the Stratford Park Leisure Centre, the Museum in the Park and the Pulse. These buildings consume significant amounts of energy, particularly for heating swimming pools and providing other community services.

The council’s ambition is to create spaces that are not only energy-efficient but also comfortable and welcoming for visitors. However, one of the main challenges with many of their properties lies in the fact that the ageing gas boilers currently in place are highly inefficient and will not be able to meet the council’s carbon-neutral targets. Upgrading these systems is essential if Stroud District Council is to reach its sustainability goals and improve the buildings for their community.

Our approach

For this project, we identified the most effective approach to decarbonise the sites, taking a holistic approach. This involved implementing a combination of solutions across the three buildings, including the installation of:

  • 2,300m2 of wall insulation
  • 1,250kW of CO2 heat pumps
  • 3 x 5m3/s air handling units
  • 928 solar panels

These systems will play a crucial role in Stroud District Council’s decarbonisation goals.

The results

Over the 20-year lifespan of these systems, the council is projected to save £937,220 in energy costs, while more importantly, achieving a reduction of 14,806 tonnes in carbon emissions.

The upgrades mark a significant step forward in their commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality.

Because of the massively lowered carbon footprint, we’re really looking after future generations who will want to use the leisure centre. I think it’s an amazing opportunity for leisure services at Stratford Park.
